Artificial Florilegia Series 2021-24

Artificial Florilegia is a series of works inspired by Flemish still-life oil paintings. The "living still lifes" capture the profusion of accurate flower depictions; each element of the intricate flower bouquets is minutely arranged and precisely crafted using state-of-the-art technologies. However, despite their captured beauty, the flowers will inevitably begin to wilt and brown, serving as a poignant reminder of the transience of all things.

The Creation Process

Every digital flower arrangement integrates various methods for creating photorealistic flowers; these range from high-resolution scanned segments to procedurally generated components crafted using mathematical formulas (such as the Fibonacci sequence) to guide the growth of the flower, the placement of petals and the motion of its stamens.

Besides the digital creation process of all the objects in the artwork, scanned light information from original oil paintings was used to recreate an exciting interplay of lights and shadows reminiscent of traditional still-life paintings. The artworks explore "digital origin" as one of their underlying themes, incorporating pixel textures on every object, regardless of size, to depict their visual attributes. These textures originate from real-life scanned data, combined with generative AI tools for refinement and enhancement of details as much as possible. Every artwork takes about 3-5 weeks to complete. In addition to the moving image, each artwork has its own composed soundtrack.

Collaboration with Dalbin

NFTs have gone mainstream, but the availability of high-quality displays has yet to catch up. In 2022, I was invited to collaborate with Dalbin Tables to create exclusive artwork for two of their tables. These luxury NFT displays, designed for digital art collectors, feature a touchscreen tabletop with a built-in computer and showcase the artwork Spring is Coming in ultra 4K resolution. It was sold for $34,205 USD in partnership with SuperRare, the premier curated marketplace for unique NFTs.

Exhibitions and Events

The Artificial Florilegia series was prominently featured in numerous exhibitions and events globally, receiving critical acclaim for its innovative approach and attention to detail. Highlights include a screening at the Beijing Contemporary Art Expo, multiple artworks from the series displayed on over 210 screens throughout the entire city of Shenzhen, China, and in the lobby of Tour First, the tallest skyscraper in Paris.

The artwork β€œPoetic Of Space” was prominently featured on a 10-meter monolith display at the Dongdaemun Design Plaza in Seoul, Korea, where it won the Best Artwork Award.

October 2023 marked one of my most significant achievements, when I was commissioned by the Deji Art Museum in China to create a "living still life" based on one artwork from their collection for their permanent exhibition and the opening of "Nothing Still About Still Lifes - Three Centuries of Floral Compositions." Having my art featured in one of China's most innovative museums is an immense milestone for me, and I am incredibly proud to have my work displayed alongside some of the world's finest artists.
